Mr. Ryoji MAYUMI is from Nankan-cho, Tamana-gun, Kumamoto Prefecture, which is famous for Nankan-age.He studied under Taishu INOUE at Shodaiyaki Fumoto Kiln in Arao City, Kumamoto Prefecture, and worked at Fumoto Kiln for many years as a disciple of Naoyuki INOUE of Fumoto Kiln.

He married Sumiko, who was also training at Fumoto Kiln, and after building Mayumi Kiln in Izumi-cho, Tamana District, Kumamoto Prefecture with Sumiko in 1998,they work together (Mr.Mayumi work with wheel techniques, and Mrs.Mayumi work using techniques such as inlay and honing.)

When you get off the expressway at Tamana and continue along the relaxing countryside, and you will arrive at Mayumi Kiln. Currently, the confectionery shop "Renren Sweets" opened at the end of 2019 by their second daughter Ren, which was renovated from the old exhibition hall, is located next to the premises of "Mayumi Kiln", which is their home and workshop. Now that many years have passed since we started business, we feel at ease with their sincere, kind, and somewhat cute personalities, but when we first met Mr.Mayumi, we felt a sense of security. We remember being nervous because he was shy, unsmiling as other craftsman with big hand. From that time on, he had a reputation for his high level of potter's wheel skills, and we had the impression that he was an indispensable potter at Fumoto Kiln. Even though he is now independent and very busy, he still goes to the Fumoto kiln to help when necessary, such as when there is a shortage of manpower such as filling the kiln.

As you may already know, Mayumi pottery tablewares are easy to use for everyday dining, backed by advanced potter's wheel techniques.Improvements can be made through use, such as how easy it is to hold pots and teapots, how well they drain, the balance of the overall shape including the spout, and the application of glaze to mold-prone areas to make them easier to maintain as vessels used every day.Dishes, bowls, and bowls have no sharp edges, making them comfortable to use and look at.

Even the vessels with decorations such as inlays and hogs can be enjoyed with their plain shapes and glazes. Both products are made by Mayumi Kiln, and you can enjoy your meal by combining them or with products from other kilns.

Currently, the types and glazes used at Mayumi kiln have been narrowed down, but mainly transparent glazes, rice bran glazes, gosu glazes, candy glazes, and yellow glazes are used to make vessels. In addition to tableware, we also sell flower vases and clay pots.

We hold a solo exhibition every two year at our store "Kogeki Keaton," in Tokyo and each time it has been very well received. They also create large pieces that are unique to solo exhibitions, so please come and visit us next time if you're in the area.
