TOSHIHIKO
Tamba ware is counted as one of Japan's six ancient kilns, along with Seto, Shigaraki, Echizen, Tokoname, and Bizen, and its origins are said to date from the end of the Heian period to the beginning of the Kamakura period. It is a production area of pottery with a history of over 850 years.
It wasn't that long ago that the word Tamba ware became popular. At the beginning of the Showa era, Soetsu Yanagi, who started the folk art movement, made it known around the world as a useful and healthy product.
Toshihiko Kiln is located in Tachikui, a peaceful place surrounded by the beautiful mountains of Sasayama in Hyogo.
Mr. Toshihiko Shimizu of Toshihiko Kiln was a disciple of Kanjiro Kawai, and after becoming independent, he studied under Mr. Kazutaka Ikuta, who made pottery in Tamba Sasayama. Mr. Ikuta used Tamba clay to make bowls and beveled vessels, mainly in bran glaze and black glaze, and Mr. Shimizu also makes glazed pottery using techniques inherited from his master.
Mr. Shimizu creates pottery with an eye to creating pottery that fits the needs of the people's daily lives, and in addition, his pottery is a wonderful blend of elegance and sexiness, and is also practical. We feel that the aesthetic sense of the creator himself is revealed.
Since the glaze is natural, it may not bake as expected. However, both when the pottery is highly grilled and when it is not, a different beauty emerges, making it an indescribably beautiful piece of pottery. It is a pottery that attracts people regardless of age or gender.
